Prose Playground Case Study

Launching a Thriving Membership Community for Writers

When we first partnered with Prose Playground, their vision was clear: create a space where writers could connect for support and accountability as they worked on their individual goals of writing consistently and/or publishing their work.

Their founder Joselin was a well-known writer and teacher and her classes and initial writing groups were already getting great feedback. And writers were hungry for more connection, accountability, and creative support. The audience trusted the vision, and there was momentum starting to build around the community.

But there were challenges. Like many growing community businesses, much of the operational and strategic responsibility lived with one person. And there were lots of products to launch and manage.

We stepped in to help leverage that momentum into a sustainable, high-converting membership launch while building the systems needed to support the community long after the initial excitement faded.

Designing a Membership Built for Repeatable Revenue

Our work started with the business model. Prose Playground had sales, but for many one-off products: classes, workshops, retreats. They had started experimenting with an ongoing writing group membership, but it was a work in progress and felt disjointed.

Together, we started using the current products to bring together an ongoing membership structure that would be a no-brainer for writers who were looking to learn and connect with each other.

We designed:

  • A free to paid member flow that invited members in to the full experience authentically and effectively.

  • A pricing model that valued the community features and would work long term.

  • A plan for validation and early bird opportunities to reward their first official members.

We built:

  • A community structure on Circle to support a paid membership, a free community, and one-off classes.

  • An evergreen launch process to invite members in via email, live events and DMs.

  • A repeatable lightweight launch process to support quarterly enrollment.

Creating a High-Converting Launch

One of the biggest goals of the partnership was turning audience excitement and loyalty to the founder into meaningful buy-in and community engagement.

This was their first ever official launch so we developed a launch strategy that would bring the current audience along and constantly reward them for loyalty and early action. The message was centered around clarity, connection, and community-driven momentum. Through intentional messaging and strategic email sequences, the launch experience helped writers understand not only what the membership included, but why committing and being part of the community long term mattered.

Within the first month, a huge percentage of the existing email audience converted into paying members.

Joselin started with an email list of ~500 and by the end of 4 weeks, 50 of them had converted to annual membership which is an unprecedented 10% conversion rate to a premium annual commitment.

The launch created strong early momentum while also laying the groundwork for long-term community sustainability beyond the initial enrollment period.

Filling the Operational Gaps Behind the Scenes

Alongside launch strategy, we also became a hands-on operational partner behind the scenes.

Because Joselin had been managing nearly every aspect of the business alone, part of our role was helping fill the strategic and operational gaps that naturally emerge during rapid growth.

We helped create clearer systems for onboarding, communication, engagement, and member experience so the community could continue growing without placing unsustainable pressure on the founder.

The goal wasn’t just a one-time launch fluke. It was building a process that allowed the community to continue growing quarter after quarter.

Building a Repeatable Growth Strategy

After the initial launch, we focused on creating a growth system that could continue bringing new writers into the community and invite them into long-term members.

Prose Playground offers several ways for writers to enter their world, including classes, workshops, events, and the free community. We designed email systems that connected each of these experiences instead of allowing them to operate as separate products.

Someone might first discover Prose Playground through an event, join the free community to stay connected, attend additional programming, and eventually become a paid member. Each step gave writers more value while naturally introducing them to the deeper support, accountability, and relationships available inside the membership.

We also developed a quarterly enrollment strategy centered around a high-profile event or guest, such as an event with Anne Lamott. These moments helped Prose Playground reach a larger audience while giving new writers an immediate reason to engage with the community.

Behind the scenes, the process required carefully coordinated email sequences, audience segmentation, event promotion, community invitations, and membership enrollment campaigns. But from the member’s perspective, the experience felt simple: discover Prose Playground, experience the community, and join when they were ready.

Instead of relying on constant launches or one-off sales, Prose Playground now had a repeatable system for growing its audience, nurturing relationships, and converting more writers into recurring members quarter after quarter.

What Changed

Through our partnership, Prose Playground moved from selling disconnected classes and writing experiences to operating a cohesive membership business designed for long-term growth.

  • 50 people joined as annual members during the first four-week launch

  • Roughly 10% of the existing email audience converted to a premium annual membership

  • Recurring revenue has doubled since launch

  • One-off classes, events, and workshops became entry points into a larger member journey

  • A clear pathway was created from audience member, to free community member, to paid member

  • Automated email systems helped nurture writers across each stage of that journey

  • Quarterly membership campaigns created a repeatable rhythm for attracting and converting new members

  • High-profile events expanded the audience while giving new writers an immediate experience of the community

  • Paid membership became a more reliable source of recurring revenue

  • The founder gained a clearer, more sustainable structure for managing multiple offers

  • Complex marketing and operational systems worked together behind the scenes while the member experience remained simple and welcoming

From One Successful Launch to Sustainable Membership Business

The initial launch proved that Prose Playground’s audience was ready to make a meaningful commitment to the community. But the larger result was building a business that no longer had to start from scratch with every class, event, or enrollment period.

Each experience could now contribute to the same long-term growth system: bringing more writers into the audience, helping them experience the value of the community, and inviting them into paid membership when the timing was right.

By combining membership design, launch strategy, email marketing, and operational systems, Friendly Nooks helped Prose Playground turn strong audience trust into a repeatable and increasingly sustainable community business.
